Why is a Wired Headset for PS4 Better?

In fact, a corded headset allows the manufacturer to fully put the best features into their products. The wired connection to the PS4 console is free of interference, transmits a cleaner and faster signal, and provides the best possible sound clarity.

In addition, it should be understood that the price of the wired headset model will be slightly lower wirelessly with the same “stuffing”.

At the same time, I am not disputing the advantages of wireless headsets – they are huge. But if you don’t have to move away from your head while playing with your headset on, I don’t see the point in paying for the wireless option.

Otherwise, I suggest you check out my review of wireless gaming headsets.

Best Wired Headset for the PS4 in 2022

I want to make you happy – the choice of wired headsets for Playstation 4 is very large. Almost all the brands that are interested in the gamer audience have done a good job here. And, considering that PS4 is one of the most popular consoles (Sony is simply good), we have a lot to choose from.

Best Wired Headset for PS4

#1. HyperX Cloud II Gaming Headset

HyperX Cloud II Headset for PS4

The HyperX Cloud II is one of the most successful PS4 headsets you can find on the market for the RIGHT price.

As the name suggests, this is an updated version of the HyperX Cloud headset. Compared to the previous model, the connection scheme of the device with PC was optimized, several updates were made in design, as well as the technical characteristics of the microphone were improved. The headset is still focused on gamers and has a reasonable price.

The headphones are made according to the classic 2.0 scheme. The basis of the device is a pair of neodymium magnets with a diameter of 53 mm. The range of playable frequencies is from 15 to 25,000 Hz, which exceeds the performance of most competitive models from ASUS, Logitech or Razer. There is also a virtual 7.1 surround sound mode, activation of which can be useful in today’s PC games. The frequency range of the microphone in the new model has been expanded from 100-12000 Hz to 50-18000 Hz. The manufacturer declares the HyperX Cloud II to be compatible with all current platforms, including the latest generation game consoles.

Design and ergonomics

The design of the headset has been maintained in a strict style. There are no backlighting elements in design, which gives the device more solidity. The color scheme consists of a combination of black and silver shades. Also available for sale is a modification where the aluminum is replaced by a deep red color. The side edges of the headphone cups are decorated with metallic inserts with a trendy nowadays rough structure of grinding. On each of them is the logo of the HyperX series. Other trim elements include leatherette and plastic, with a soft-touch finish.

The first thing you notice when you take the headset in your hands is its weight. The HyperX Cloud II weighs 320 grams, not including the cable, so the headphones feel almost nothing on your head. Additionally, the comfortable shape of the ear cushions contributes to the lightness of the headset. Their diameter is 105 mm, so they completely cover the ear. The resulting level of noise isolation can be described as high. Putting the headset on the head, the potential owner protects himself from almost all outside noise sources, which allows you to fully concentrate on the game.

Although the outer headband has an internal metal frame, its design is very flexible. The headphones willingly adapt to the shape of the wearer’s head, while avoiding excessive pressure in the ear area. The material of the headband is made of leatherette. On the inside of the headband there is a soft polyurethane foam padding with anatomic memory effect.

To adjust the height of the headband there are seven divisions on each side of the headphones. This is the easiest and most common adjustment system of all gaming headset manufacturers.

The microphone holder is located in the left cup of the device. Thus, the user can easily detach it, turning the HyperX Cloud II into an ordinary headphone. Only you will have to carefully watch the plug, which covers the connector. Due to its small size, it is quite easy to lose it.

The microphone has a flexible base and can hold almost any shape. At its end there is a foam nozzle to screen out unwanted noise (breathing and so on).

When assembled, the HyperX Cloud II has a pleasant appearance. To some extent, the design of the device can be called “adult”, which looks a little unusual against the background of many bright colors and futuristic shapes that dominate the segment of gaming headsets today.

Sound quality and user experience

For testing in gaming applications, a number of popular online projects were chosen: Counter-Strike 1.6, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Battlefield 4, Dota 2, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. The best option would be the “classic” stereo mod. In it the headset sounds more alive and bright. Clearly heard any shots and movements of enemies on the map, to determine the direction of the steps is not difficult. Virtual surround sound activation will be justified in Battlefield 4.

This is a great headset for PS4 (and not only), which will please you not only with quality, comfort and reliability, but also with price.

#2. Razer BlackShark V2 Wired Gaming Headset

Razer BlackShark V2

The Razer BlackShark V2 is a great choice for gamers who enjoy their time at the PS4 (and beyond).

In the past I’ve had no sympathy for Razer headsets, but the Razer Blackshark V2 is the first one I’ve liked. While most Razer headsets are too bulky, too confusing, too expensive, or a combination of the three, the Blackshark V2 is a sleek and handy little peripheral that doesn’t come cheap, but it’s not that expensive either, given its good sound.

Unlike most Razer headsets (like the Razer Kraken Ultimate), the Razer Blackshark V2 is not a bulky monster that can only live in a large gaming corner. The Blackshark V2 weighs only 260g, is compact, and is sturdy enough to hide in a backpack. Part of the reason for this is that Razer is positioning the Blackshark V2 as a cybersports headset, and the company believes it will have to be traveled with often. With that in mind, my only complaint is that the cups don’t rotate, which means they can’t fold.Keep that in mind when choosing a travel bag.

On the left ear cup is a removable flexible microphone with a large foam pop filter. There is also a large volume control dial, which is easy to find and it has a distinct click when it reaches the midpoint. This takes the guesswork out of guessing how loud your game will be when you first plug it in. There is also a small microphone mute button on the back. The right earpiece contains no additional features.

Aesthetically, the Blackshark V2 has a black plastic case with green Razer logos on the ear cups. My only complaint is that the cups are held in place with adjustable metal rods, which are pretty good, but leave a lot to be desired in terms of functionality.

For the most part, the Razer Blackshark V2 is an extremely comfortable headset. The plush ear cushions feature both passive noise cancellation and breathable memory foam, so wearing them blocks out a little noise while keeping your ears cool. The headband is also heavily padded it gives each part of your head a soft cushion to lean on.

However, the Blackshark V2 has one significant flaw, and it is highly visible. Instead of an adjustable steel or plastic headband, the cups themselves move up and down, held in place by two metal rods. When you’re not wearing the headset, it’s very difficult to adjust the rods, and when you are wearing it, it’s impossible to see if it sits flat. Expect to spend a lot of time pulling one side down when you pull the other side up, or ask your friend how it fits. Eventually you’ll be able to find the right fit, but if you ever need to readjust the headset, you’ll have to start that whole tedious process all over again.

When it comes to gaming, the Blackshark V2 sounds great. This is at least in part due to the inclusion of THX surround sound in the headset. You’re probably familiar with THX as the legendary audio company that made movies like Star Wars so memorable, but THX does license its technology for home audio equipment as well. By default, the Blackshark V2 includes THX Spatial Audio and can even recognize if the program you’re using requires game or movie mode. Blackshark V2’s stereo sound is also good, but I turned on THX for almost every application, and it improved things in every way.

As for games, the Blackshark V2 is great for any genre. I tested it with Doom Eternal, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, and World of Warcraft. Doom Eternal was a particularly impressive experience, as I could hear the roar of demons, the rumble of my shotgun and the stomp of enemies, all in perfect balance with the game’s rumbling electronic soundtrack. And listening to the cool orchestral score in Age of Empires was as thrilling as Lara Croft’s expository dialogue.

The most notable feature of the Razer Blackshark V2 is the THX profiles, as discussed above. But even beyond that, the headset has a few nice things. First and foremost is the microphone; it’s clear and accurate, filtering out a lot of unpleasant consonant noise. Just keep in mind that the default microphone is pretty quiet, so you have to adjust the sound pickup in the Razer Synapse software.

It’s also worth mentioning that the Blackshark V2 connects to your PC via USB dongle, but it also has a 3.5mm audio cable. So you can use the Blackshark V2 with gaming consoles and tablets. That’s not what the headset is designed for, but you can get pretty decent sound on your PS4 or Xbox One if you don’t want to buy multiple gaming headsets.

In our review of the Razer Blackshark V2, we noted the excellent sound quality, comfortable design, and robust headset profiles. There is very little about this headset that we didn’t like, especially at its very reasonable price point.

#3. Turtle Beach Recon 70 Wired Headset for PS4

Turtle Beach Recon 70

The Recon 70 is a budget headset for the PS4 with no budget at all!

Turtle Beach is constantly expanding their range of headsets. The latest member of this family is the Recon 70 entry-level headset. With a price of 34.99€, you are looking at a fairly inexpensive headphone-micro combination. Whether this has an effect on the quality or we are looking at a price-performance monster, we found out for you in the test.

The headset comes in a stylish blue/black. The color changes depending on which console you choose the headset for. The version for the Xbox uses the colors green/black. The Turtle Beach logo can be seen discreetly on both earcups inside as well as outside and on the insides.

The ear cups are covered by two (synthetic) leather pads and can be moved sideways as well as slightly vertically. On the left side are the audio cable, the microphone and a volume control. The latter works steplessly, but could have been equipped with a slightly thicker wheel to make it a bit more comfortable to use. The distance between the pads can be adjusted in 9 steps on both sides. However, these are not particularly firm, so the headset kept adjusting after a short time in our tests.

On the top, there is the chic lettering of “Turtle Beach” in addition to optical applications, which are definitely a matter of taste. Overall, the exterior of the Recon 70 literally screams “Hello, I am a gaming headset”. So if you’re looking for a headset that you can wear while gaming and also use as normal headphones in everyday life, you’d better look elsewhere.

Plastic earpiece

The Recon 70 is made entirely of plastic and has a fairly simple design, which is why you can clearly see where the individual parts are put together. However, this is not disturbing, because the workmanship and material quality turns out clean and is absolutely okay for the price. We were also positively surprised by the padding on the ear cups, which we had seen in much more expensive headsets. However, the Recon 70 “only” has 40mm sound drivers, instead of the 50mm common in better headsets. More about the fact that they still sound decent later.

As for other gamers, PS4 fans are no stranger to the issue of comfort. Of course, you should adjust your expectations according to the price, but you can also expect a certain wearing comfort from inexpensive headsets. We noticed three things that were annoying.

Firstly, the microphone is very short, so it hangs more on the cheek than in front of the mouth and thus loses quality. Secondly, cables protrude from the headset to the right and left of the headband. Result: The Recon 70 not only looks worse, it is also very susceptible to damage at this point. Lastly, and for us the most noticeable point, is the questionable head pad. This is not only very narrow and thin. You can also immediately feel the aforementioned cable when you press it in lightly with your thumb. Consequently, you also feel this when wearing the headset, especially people with large heads should notice this annoyingly after a few minutes.

Now to the heart of the headset: How does the Recon 70 do in the sound test? We tested the headset extensively and came to a positive conclusion. You get a solid headset for just under $60. It should be noted that it gets a bit muffled at higher volumes.

The other sound quality also presents a decent picture. It takes a trained ear to recognize unclean highs and lows. As with many gaming headsets, the trebles of the Recon 70 are also slightly raised. This unfortunately leads to slight rattling, especially at high volumes. We also noticed the good audio localization of the headset positively in our tests on the Playstation. It can be clearly recognized at almost any time whether a noise is coming from the left or right, but it gets a bit more difficult vertically. We have heard better, but Turtle Beach’s headset is good for the price.

byReyus rating

The Turtle Beach Recon 70 can score with a price of ~$45, especially in terms of sound and looks. The sound is relatively good which makes almost any game on PS4 full of breathtaking emotions and gives the effect of full immersion in the process.. However, it makes concessions in terms of wearing comfort. This is only partly guaranteed due to the too small pads.

The Internet and new technology have become part of my life and I can avidly study new trends to keep up with what's new. I can also play games, work with videos, conduct business (and not so much) negotiations, where the headset is actively used. So I have a lot to tell you and a lot to recommend.
